On Thursday, November the 3rd, the Cultural Center of Gimnasio Moderno hosted an engaging talk on ‘Perdón y Memoria en el Conflicto Armado’ given by Valeria Jaramillo, an expert in Colombia’s armed conflict and former professional at the Comisión de la Verdad.
Seventh grade students attended this event as part of their ‘Pensamiento, Lenguaje y Sociedad’ (PLS) course, where they have focused on researching and addressing questions about the historical memory of Colombia. Throughout the whole academic year, seventh graders have developed outstanding research as well as products such as videos, podcasts, articles, and presentations about some of the most meaningful events in our country’s recent history. Historical processes such as El Bogotazo, the massacre of El Salado, the Palace of Justice siege, and the so-called ‘Falsos Positivos’, among others, have been extensively addressed in the course.
This talk was an amazing closure after a year full of new learnings, as well as an interactive and different way in which students could solve their doubts, put to practice their critical sense, and question themselves about the complexities of Colombia’s society. This activity brings new perspectives, proposes a deeper look at what it means to be Colombian, and sensibilizes our students so that they can form their own views and informed conclusions about the issues present in their own country.
